Fauna of the Slavkov Forest
The fauna of the Slavkov Forest is quite abundant and variegated. Populations of wild game are concentrated in the south-western and central part, while the sika deer (Cervus nippon), moufflon (Ovis musimon) and the European fallow deer (Dama dama) are bred in game parks. There are still small numbers of the once frequent wood grouse (Tetrao urogallus) and larger populations of the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix). Birds of prey and owls may be encountered in great numbers. Smaller bird species are represented by e.g. the black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), the great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), and the common wood pigeon (Columba palumbus). One of the rarer species is the European souslik (Citellus citellus).
